Ripples in carpet are not just ugly — they are dangerous
Walk across a room and feel the carpet ripple under your feet. See the wrinkles running across the hallway, or the loose wave in front of the sofa. That is carpet that has come off its stretch, and it gets worse every month. Foot traffic pushes the loose carpet around, the ripples grow, and eventually someone catches a toe and goes down. Loose carpet is one of the most common trip hazards in homes, and it is completely fixable.
Carpet stretching puts it back the way it was installed: tight, flat, and smooth. We use a power stretcher — the same tool installers use — to pull the carpet tight in every direction and re-hook it onto the tack strips around the room. When it is done right, the ripples are gone and the carpet looks and feels new again. No replacement. No new carpet. Just your carpet, flat again.
Why carpet goes loose
Poor installation is the number one cause. If the installer did not stretch the carpet properly on day one — or used a knee kicker instead of a power stretcher on a big room — the carpet starts loose and gets looser. A surprising amount of Orlando carpet was installed fast during the building booms, and fast installation means loose carpet a few years later.
Heavy furniture drags are the second cause. Sliding a loaded bookshelf or a sleeper sofa across carpet pulls it off the tack strip. It only takes one move to create a ripple that grows for years.
Humidity and age are the third. Carpet backing relaxes over time, especially in Florida's damp climate. A carpet that was perfectly tight at year two can be rippled at year ten just from the backing loosening up. This is normal, and it is exactly what re-stretching fixes.
Steam cleaning does not cause ripples — that is a myth. What happens is that a deep clean can reveal looseness that was already there, because the cleaning relaxes the fibers and the existing slack shows. If your carpet rippled after a cleaning, it was already loose. The fix is stretching, not avoiding cleaning.
What stretching fixes — and what it does not
Stretching fixes ripples, wrinkles, waves, and loose areas. It fixes carpet that has pulled away from the tack strip at the edges. It fixes the buckled hump in the middle of the room. If the carpet is otherwise in good shape, stretching makes it look nearly new.
Stretching does not fix worn carpet. If the traffic lane is worn down to the backing, pulling it tight will not bring the fiber back. It does not fix pet-damaged pad — if the pad is saturated and breaking down, the carpet will keep moving no matter how tight you stretch it. And it does not fix carpet that is too small for the room or cut wrong. During our visit we check all of this and tell you honestly whether stretching will solve your problem.
Repairs we handle
Not every carpet problem is looseness. We do the common carpet repairs too.
Patching: a burn, a bleach spot, or a permanent stain in one area does not mean replacing the whole room. We cut out the damaged section and seam in a matching piece — from a closet, or from remnant you saved. Done well, the patch is nearly invisible.
Seam repair: carpet seams open up over time, especially in doorways. We re-seam them with proper seam tape and adhesive so they hold. A split seam catches feet and vacuum cleaners, so fixing it early prevents bigger damage.
Transitions: where carpet meets tile or wood, the transition strip takes abuse. We replace damaged transition strips and re-secure carpet edges that have pulled loose.
Pet damage: cats that claw carpet at doorways, dogs that dig at a spot — we patch the damaged area and re-stretch around it. If the pad underneath is damaged too, we replace the pad in that section.
When repair beats replacement
The math is simple. Re-stretching a room costs a fraction of replacing the carpet in that room. Patching a damaged area costs a fraction of re-carpeting. If your carpet is less than 10 to 12 years old and the fiber is still in decent shape, repair almost always wins.
Replacement makes sense when the carpet is worn through in traffic lanes, the backing is breaking down everywhere, or the style is 20 years out of date and you are remodeling anyway. We will tell you which side of the line you are on. We do repairs — we have no reason to sell you replacement, and we do not.
Our process
You tell us what the carpet is doing — ripples, loose areas, damage. On the visit, we check the carpet, the pad, and the tack strips to find the cause, not just the symptom. Then we power-stretch the room (or rooms), re-hook every edge, trim the excess, and tuck it clean. For repairs, we cut, seam, and blend the patch, then stretch the surrounding carpet so everything lies flat. We vacuum up and walk through with you before we leave. Every project is different — contact us for a free written estimate.
